The French word “giclée” (pronounced zhee-CLAY) is a noun that means a spray or a spurt of liquid, derived from the French verb “gicler” meaning “to squirt”. Giclee is the term used to describe a digital, inkjet, reproduction print made from a work created in another medium. Prints made from paintings, watercolors, drawings and so on can all become giclee’s, and the process has its own workflow. Each printmaker will have his or her own way of turning the original artwork into a high-resolution digital file that has faithfully captured all the details and colors of the original work of art. Images are generated from high resolution digital files and printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper. The giclee printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction. The color vibrancy, duration, and virtually continuous tone of a Giclee are significantly superior to traditional lithography, capable of producing incredibly detailed prints for both the fine art and photographic markets.
